Brussels from the Mont des Arts: Garden Geometry and a Gothic Spire
About this photograph
The story behind the frame
The garden at the Mont des Arts is designed around a long, deliberate view. Dark clipped hedges and patterned planting beds pull the eye downhill, while the tower of Brussels Town Hall rises well beyond the roofs. The city is ordered into foreground, middle distance and skyline. On this summer evening the formal composition was full of informal life. Visitors occupied the paths and edges of the garden, and a couple paused at the centre of the lower foreground. Their small scale makes the garden feel expansive and gives the distant tower a stronger sense of height. The large open sky is part of the photograph's rhythm. It creates a calm field above the dense architecture and lets the narrow Gothic spire stand alone. Brussels appears here as a layered capital: ceremonial gardens, everyday gathering place and historic skyline in one continuous view.
About the place
Brussels · Belgium
The Mont des Arts forms a landscaped connection between Brussels' upper and lower city, close to the Royal Quarter and the historic centre. Its formal garden and elevated viewpoints create one of the clearest sightlines across the central city. The distant tower belongs to Brussels Town Hall on the Grand-Place. The fifteenth-century Gothic landmark is crowned by a figure of Saint Michael and remains one of the most recognisable elements of the Brussels skyline.
