The story behind the frame
The Powder Tower has a weight and scale that can make everything around it feel temporary. But on this street, the old gateway is not separated from everyday Prague. Pedestrians and vehicles share the street around it, and the city simply continues on the other side. The small sightseeing car brought that contrast into focus. In front of the dark Gothic arch, it seemed almost miniature, a light and distinctly modern presence set against a structure that has stood here for centuries. Around it, pedestrians, street signs and the ordinary movement of the city kept the scene firmly in the present. Photographed from street level on an overcast autumn day, the 85 mm perspective compresses the sightseeing car, Gothic gateway and architecture beyond into a layered composition. The wet street and soft light add another quiet layer to the scene without taking attention away from the tower. That meeting of different scales and different periods is what makes this moment interesting to me. The tower remains monumental, but it is not frozen in history. Modern Prague moves around it, turning a medieval gateway into part of the everyday life of the city.

The Powder Tower, or Prašná brána, is one of Prague’s most recognisable Gothic landmarks and one of the historic gateways into the Old Town. Standing at the edge of Prague’s historic centre in the Czech Republic, it marks a striking transition between the medieval city and the movement of modern Prague. Construction began in 1475, when the tower formed part of the city’s fortifications and marked an important entrance into Prague. Its present name comes from its later use for storing gunpowder. The gateway also became associated with the traditional route taken by Bohemian kings on their way to coronation at Prague Castle. Today, the Powder Tower stands beside the Municipal House (Obecní dům), at a point where Prague’s historic Old Town meets the movement of the modern city.
