Powder Tower and Modern Prague

The story behind the frame

The Powder Tower has a weight and scale that can make everything around it feel temporary. But on this street, the old gateway is not separated from everyday Prague. People walk beneath it, traffic passes through, and the city simply continues on the other side. The small sightseeing car brought that contrast into focus. Beneath the dark Gothic arch, it seemed almost miniature, a light and distinctly modern presence passing through a structure that has stood here for centuries. Around it, pedestrians, street signs and the ordinary movement of the city kept the scene firmly in the present. That meeting of different scales and different periods is what makes this moment interesting to me. The tower remains monumental, but it is not frozen in history. Modern Prague moves directly through it, turning a medieval gateway into part of the everyday life of the city.
