The Powder Tower and the City Below

The story behind the frame

From this part of the street, the Powder Tower seems to rise almost abruptly above the surrounding buildings. Its dark stone and steep roof give it a weight that feels very different from the lighter façades around it, yet nothing in the street below stops because of that presence. Cars move toward the gateway, pedestrians gather beneath it, signs and traffic lights occupy the same space as Gothic stonework. That ordinary movement is what interested me here. The tower is monumental, but the city does not treat it as something isolated from daily life. For centuries this was an entrance into Prague, and even now the idea of passage remains visible. The street still leads directly through the old arch and into the historic centre beyond. The surroundings have changed completely, but the tower continues to stand over the flow of the city, connecting an old gateway with the Prague moving beneath it today.
